HL Central is proud to announce the winner of the 2005 T.J. Duane Community Building Scholarship. The scholarship, named in honor of HL
Central’s founder, is a $1,000 award presented to a 1L who has an outstanding
record of community service and shows promise to continue strengthening the
community at Harvard Law School.
This year's winner, Andrew Aqui, is a graduate of UCLA.
While in college, Andrew became involved in Circle K International, eventually
serving as Secretary for California-Nevada-Hawaii. While holding this
year-long position, Andrew inspired members in his district to perform over
40,000 hours of service in various organizations. Andrew was also the first VP
of Philanthropy for Phi Alpha Delta, UCLA’s Pre-Law Fraternity, which he
co-founded. In addition to these activities, Andrew has devoted a significant
amount of time to mentoring underpriviledged youth through UNICAMP and the
AmeriCorps – Students in Service program.
The two honorable mentions also served their communities in numerous ways.
Honorable mentions were presented with a $100 award. These two students are:
Lam Ho, a graduate of the Brown, has created The Giving
Tree to provide Christmas presents to underpriviledged children at Brown and Oxford universities, and now Harvard Law School. Lam has also been a vocal advocate for
gay-lesbian rights throughout his education and has devoted significant time to
helping people suffering from AIDS.
Justin Albstein, a
graduate of Yale University, founded and directed the Saybrook
Orchestra Education Initiative at Yale. Justin remains involved with the
organization, which bridges the University and New Haven communities through
music.
